Twenty-six people injured—twenty-one in Pozzuoli, five in Giugliano. Three hundred displaced. Some uninhabited buildings collapsed. Firefighters and technicians continue inspecting structures across the area, and the number of displaced residents may rise as damage assessments proceed.
Accounts from residents of the Pozzuoli, Bagnoli, and Coroglio area report that the power went out at the time of the earthquake, and mobile phone service was unavailable for many carriers. They experienced moments of panic that recalled the 1980 earthquake. Water service was cut off in Pozzuoli and appears to remain unavailable.
“The houses can’t withstand years of earthquakes anymore,” one woman said. “The truth is we should leave. But few have the economic means to do so.”
