Aragonese Castle of Baiae: A Jewel of the Mediterranean

Aragonese Castle of Baiae: A Jewel of the Mediterranean BY T. Fizza

Perched atop a 51-meter promontory in the charming hamlet of Baia, the Aragonese Castle of Baiae reigns supreme over the breathtaking coastal landscape of Naples, Italy. Its location is nothing short of awe-inspiring. On one side, a dramatic cliff of volcanic rock plunges towards the sea, offering a natural shield. On the other, the volcanic “Fondi di Baia” calderas create a deep valley, adding another layer of defense. Walls, moats, and drawbridges further reinforce its impregnability, making it practically impregnable. This ancient fortress has witnessed centuries of drama, serving as a playground & villa for Roman elites, a strategic military stronghold, and now, home to the largest museum in the Campi Flegrei (Phlegraean Fields).
